Spotlight on Sport
As we continue to place student wellbeing at the centre of all School activities, we remain alert to the growing concerns around concussion in contact sports, particularly AFL. At Westminster, we follow AFL protocols for the management of head injuries and support families in making informed choices around their child’s safety in sport.
One option families may wish to explore is protective headwear. While there is currently no conclusive evidence that helmets prevent concussion, ongoing research is examining their potential benefits.
One development attracting interest is the SWAARM Headgear, which features patented technology designed to reduce the force of impact by dispersing linear and rotational acceleration. While Westminster does not endorse SWAARM’s findings, we find their research into injury prevention compelling.
I encourage families to undertake their own research when considering protective options. Further information can be found via the AFL’s concussion information page at afl.com.au/concussion
