Early Learning to Year 12

Old Scholar News - Edition 16 - 2020

Old Scholars’ Sport

With the shortened season now behind us, all eyes are looking towards next year and there are some exciting ideas ahead in the hands of our Clubs’ new committees:

WOS Football Club

WOSFC President Jeremy Satchell and Past President Richard Bund (’96) have met with the School to discuss establishing an Old Scholars’ Women’s Football Team. Girls’ Football has recorded significant growth in participation at the School so we are planning to have a team in place for our Old Scholars. There are details to work through but all parties are on board with this goal so we are seeking Old Scholars keen to register their interest to find out more. You can do this by contacting me on the details below.

The Club stays in Div 3 for next season but has its eyes firmly set on moving up. This will require a C team so, again if you are interested in playing, contact me in the first instance. At the Junior level, the Club will again be running the AFL Auskick program during next year’s season so we will look forward to sharing this information with you when it is released in 2021.

There are definitely great things happening at the Dragon’s Den in Glandore!

WOS Soccer Club (Women’s Team)

Another of our great Old Scholar sporting clubs, the WOS Soccer Club is seeking additional players to join their women’s squad for 2021. The friendly and welcoming Club is one of the best in the competition and plays on what is probably the best pitch in the comp. The Club is looking to expand the women’s side into two teams; all skill levels are welcome! For more information or to register your interest, please email wossc.05@gmail.com.

Super Sixes Challenge

Sunday 13 December will be a fabulous day to appeal to all the die-hard cricketers out there and I know there are many of you (I know a few myself)!

As many Old Scholars and families would be aware, we have been running successful cricket tours to the UK for some years and 2021 would have seen the next tour on its way. But, as we know, UK is off the radar at the moment for travel so the cricket tour will hopefully be re-routed to New Zealand, all things being in order.

The tour team, headed by our extraordinary tour leader, Trevor Orman, has put together a great event to bring cricket lovers together for a one-day challenge that is bound to be as much fun as it sounds.

Get your mates together and jump on board – there is only room for six teams and it is ‘first in, best dressed’ arrangement PLUS you’ll be using our new Thomas Pavilion (rivalling Lord's) as your base for the day.

More information can be found through the Super Sixes Challenge flyer above or, if you are a die-hard cricket fan, you may want to register straight away, which you can do through https://www.trybooking.com/BMENR

This cricket tournament format is not run often but apparently hugely popular when it is… so don’t delay, act today!

Hall of Sporting Fame

Thank you to those of you who have contacted me with updates and to advise of potential inclusions. As we know, this digital Hall of Sporting Fame will constantly be undergoing updates so keep your enquiries rolling in. I had hoped to share with you what information has been put up but due to a few technical issues it is not quite in the right format to do so at the moment. Once resolved, the plan is still to make it available in a future eNews.

Reunions

So 2020 was the year that wasn’t when it came to reunions with only the Class of 2010 being able to sneak in their 10 year reunion before we were shut down. Even though in South Australia we have been well placed to open up again (and please, let’s keep it that way), there are still some restrictions in place. Consequently, we’ve called it for this year and look forward to coming back next with an extensive program to catch up and celebrate the School’s 60th anniversary. We’ll be releasing dates soon so watch this space!

Christmas Lights

This will probably come as no surprise but the School has cancelled the Christmas Lights event for this year. We’ve seen many community Christmas events being cancelled, well before the School made the call to follow suit. Christmas Lights is a popular event amongst Old Scholars so it has been a difficult decision to make but the right one in these circumstances.
