Head of Outdoor Education - Edition 7 - 2021

Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Expeditions

The following expeditions are available during Terms 2, 3 and 4. Information packs can be collected from the OED office or follow the link for each trip.

Saturday 12 to Monday 14 June - Three-day Bushwalk in Mt Remarkable.

Saturday 25 to Tuesday 29 June - Four-day Bushwalk in the scenic and rugged Edeowie Gorge near Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges. Suitable for all levels.

Saturday 3 to Saturday 10 July - Telemark Cross Country Ski Trip near Falls Creek staying in a mountain hut and exploring alpine regions on skis. Suitable for experienced students.

Friday 6 to Sunday 8 August - Three-day introduction to Mountain Bike riding on established bike trails in the Adelaide Hills. Suitable for Bronze or Silver students.

Saturday 4 to Monday 6 September - Three-day introduction to Rockclimbing conducted in the Adelaide Hills and local indoor venues. Suitable for Bronze and Silver students.

Friday 24 to Tuesday 28 September - Four days of Rockclimbing at the world-famous Mt Arapiles in Victoria. Suitable for Bronze to Gold students with prior rock climbing experience.

Friday 24 to Tuesday 28 September - Four days of Bushwalking, possibly on KI world-famous Coastline. Suitable for Bronze to Gold students. TBC.

Sunday 24 to Tuesday 26 October - Three days of Kayaking on Katarapko Creek between Berri and Loxton.

Wednesday 3 to Monday 15 December - New Zealand Multi-Activity Expedition. Full. There is a waitlist for available places. Dependant on Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble.

Year 8/9 Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Program

If students wish to join the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Program and participate in expeditions they need to register and set up an ORB (Online Record Book). Information and Links are below. Normally we would have over 60% of the year cohort involved in this exciting and rewarding program.

Some students are completing the Mt Remarkable Bushwalk this June long weekend as part of the program. Other opportunities are available in Term 3 from the list above.

Year 9 Camp

During Week 1 and Week 2 of Term 2 all Year 9 students completed a four-day lightweight expedition from the following choices:

  1. Innes National Park Bushwalk- Involving scenic coastal and beach walking and opportunities to snorkel in secluded bays.
  2. Katarapko Creek Kayaking- Involving scenic kayaking on the backwaters of the Murray River between Berri and Loxton with opportunities for swimming and fishing.
  3. Mawson Trail Mountain Bike touring- Involving biking on the Mawson Trail between Laura and Wirrabara and opportunities to trail ride on the famous Melrose mountain bike tracks.

All expeditions were aimed as an introduction to outdoor activity and expedition skills, building on the experience gained on the Year 8 Camp. Feedback has been sought from the students to evaluate and value-add the offerings for 2022.

Year 7 Camp

During Week 3 of Term 2, all Year 7 students completed a three-day Outdoor Education program at Douglas Scrub and Onkaparinga Gorge near McLaren Flat. Students participated in their class groups and involved themselves in orienteering, abseiling, high ropes and bush-dancing activities whilst camping in tents and cooking on Trangia stoves.

Year 8 Camp

During Week 5 of Term 2, all Year 8 students will complete a five-day Outdoor Education program involving staying at Mylor Baptist Adventure Centre participating in high ropes and other adventure challenges plus an extended bushwalking expedition in the vicinity of the Great Southern Coastal Walk camping at Waitpinga.
