The Next Generation of Westminster Netball Has Arrived
While the spotlight has been firmly on Westminster's Premier League players and the growing number of students earning State and National selection, another exciting story is unfolding in the Preparatory School.
Westminster's Year 5/6 Knockout Netball Team has secured its place among the top four school teams in South Australia, highlighting the exciting depth of young talent emerging through the School's netball pathway.
Competing against some of the state’s strongest schools, the team has powered into the final four and now has the Statewide Schools Premiership firmly in its sights.
For Westminster, however, this achievement is about much more than results.
Director of Activities, Stephen Schwerdt, said participation, enjoyment and belonging remained the foundation of netball at Westminster, while clear pathways existed for students aspiring to compete at the highest level.
"Participation, enjoyment and belonging remain the foundation of netball at Westminster, but for students with aspirations to take their game further, we also offer one of the state's most comprehensive school-based development pathways."
That journey begins in Westminster's Preparatory School Development Program, led by Preparatory School Head of PE, Nick Warren. Here, students in Years 2 to 6 develop strong technical foundations, confidence and a love of the game under the guidance of specialist coaches. From there, a clearly defined high-performance pathway provides opportunities to learn from Adelaide Thunderbirds coaches, State coaches and former Australian Diamond Sarah McKay, preparing aspiring athletes for Premier League competition, State representation and beyond.
"One of the wonderful things about Westminster is that our youngest netballers can see exactly where hard work, commitment and a love of the game can take them," Mr Warren said.
"They have incredible role models in our senior players and every opportunity to follow in their footsteps."
"This team has already achieved something special by reaching the top four in South Australia, but what excites us most is what lies ahead."
"They are the next generation of netballers, and we can't wait to watch them continue to grow throughout their journey at Westminster."
Westminster takes to the court tomorrow for the statewide knockout final series.
