Congratulations to Phoebe on an outstanding achievement in the cookery competition at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show.

Competing in the 8 – 12 years age category, Phoebe received 1st Place for Sweet Biscuit, 2nd Place for Small Cake Iced, and 3rd Place for Buttercream Decorated Small Cake, placing in every category she entered.

This year was an especially significant one for the competition, marking 100 years of cookery at the Royal Adelaide Show. Phoebe’s success across three different categories is a wonderful achievement and a fantastic recognition of her skill, creativity and hard work.

Isabella’s achievement is a wonderful recognition of her contribution and participation in an event centered on kindness, empathy and positive action within school communities.

We are delighted to celebrate Isabella’s success and the positive example she continues to set for others.

Hamish Farrelly, Year 10

We congratulate Hamish, who successfully completed and submitted an entry into the SA Anzac Spirit School Prize.

This Department of Education initiative encourages students to investigate individual South Australian service members who have enlisted in Australia's Armed Forces since Federation, and to present the findings of their research in the form of a 2,500 word report that tells the story of that service member. The entries are then judged and entered into the official public record of the Virtual War Memorial, which can then be viewed by the public as part of that service member's official history.

After the panel of judges reviewed all entries across the state, Hamish was fortunate enough to receive a Merit for his submission, which is only one step away from being a Prize Winner, of which only roughly 20 students are selected from all the entries. Hamish worked very hard on his submission, and should be proud of his achievement, given that the entry was about his grandfather, Allan Amber, who served in World War 2.

Oliver Matthews, Year 10

We also congratulate Oliver, who also successfully completed and submitted an entry into the SA Anzac Spirit School Prize.

Hamish was fortunate enough to receive a Participation certificate for his submission, after working very hard on his submission, following his successful completion of the Kokoda Track hike. Oliver wanted to preserve the legacy of a World War 2 service member's story who he learned about while on the trail.

Jack Manning, Senior School Teacher - German

During the Term 2 School holidays, Senior School German Teacher Jack Manning travelled to Germany as a recipient of the 2025 Minister’s Language Immersion Scholarship.

Jack undertook an advanced intensive language course in Freiburg im Breisgau, while also visiting host families, observing teachers and building international connections.

“Spending summer in Germany was a great reminder of the importance of languages and immersing yourself in a culture to better understand people and their perspectives.

“Through the intensive language course, I was able to strengthen my German language skills to support the learning outcomes of my students. I also had the opportunity to observe other teachers and collect a range of resources and ideas that will help make my own lessons more engaging and effective.”

Global Glory - The Sky’s No Limit for Max Scutchings

From Westminster to the World Stage, Westminster Year 12 student Max Scutchings has been crowned a Junior World Gliding Champion, achieving an extraordinary victory for Australia on the international stage.

At just 18, Max won the Club Class at the 14th FAI Junior World Gliding Championships at Aalen-Elchingen in Germany, finishing ahead of some of the world’s best young soaring pilots.

The achievement is particularly remarkable given Max completed his first solo cross-country flight less than two years ago and entered his first gliding competition only nine months ago.

Representing Australia, Max finished the championship on 7,388 points, just 40 points ahead of France’s Nicolas Caudrelier with Germany’s Nils Zitzelsberger finishing third.

The close result capped an unforgettable championship for Max, who also celebrated his 18th birthday during the competition.

“The best 100 hours of my life. It has been an experience I’ll never forget,” Max said.

A member of the Adelaide Soaring Club, Max has made an extraordinary progression through the sport. His first independent cross-country flight was just 21 months before his world championship victory.

Earlier this year, he also won the Australian Junior Gliding Championships at Benalla before earning the opportunity to represent Australia in Germany.

Competitive gliding combines aviation skill, meteorology, navigation, strategy and decision-making. Without an engine, pilots use rising columns of warm air known as thermals to gain altitude before racing across hundreds of kilometres.

Throughout a race, pilots must continually read changing weather conditions, select the best route and decide when to climb or continue towards the next thermal.

At world championship level, these decisions can make the difference between winning and losing, as demonstrated by Max’s narrow 40-point championship margin.

For Max, his passion for aviation is set to continue well beyond Westminster. After completing Year 12, he plans to apply to join the Royal Australian Air Force.

Congratulations Max on an extraordinary achievement.
