Intercol Marks the Final Chapter in Al Green's Remarkable Westminster Career

After 27 years leading Westminster basketball, legendary coach Al Green has taken charge of his final game, when the School faced off against Pembroke in this year's Senior A Intercol. 

To mark the occasion and honour one of the most influential figures in Westminster sporting history, the School has introduced the Al Green Medal, awarded annually to the best player on court in the Senior A Intercol Basketball match. 

This year, the inaugural winner of this medal, was Year 11 student, Brooklyn Arnold.

A former Australian representative, Adelaide 36ers star and National Basketball League scoring record holder, Al's impact at Westminster has extended far beyond the court. 

Over nearly three decades, he has helped shape one of South Australia's leading school basketball programs while mentoring generations of students through his passion, knowledge and unwavering commitment to the game. 

Nicknamed 'Mean Al Green', Al's decorated career included representing Australia and setting an NBL single-game scoring record with an extraordinary 71-point performance in 1984, a record that still stands today. 

When Al joined Westminster in 1999, he brought with him a wealth of elite playing experience, but it was his commitment to developing young people that would define his legacy. 

Over the past 27 years, he has coached hundreds of Westminster students, helping them develop not only their basketball skills but also resilience, discipline, teamwork and character. Under his guidance, many students have progressed to representative, state, national and collegiate basketball, while countless others have simply discovered a lifelong love of the game. 

His influence has also helped establish Westminster as one of South Australia's premier basketball schools, with a program recognised for its strong culture, high standards and clear development pathways from participation through to elite competition. 

Director of Activities Stephen Schwerdt said Al's contribution to Westminster was impossible to measure. 

"Al Green is simply one of the greats. His basketball achievements speak for themselves, but it is the way he has invested in young people for almost three decades that sets him apart." 

"Generations of Westminster students have benefited from his wisdom, encouragement and unwavering belief in their potential. The Al Green Medal is a fitting tribute that will ensure his legacy continues to inspire students every time they step onto the court for Intercol." 

For Al, the greatest reward has never been the scoreboard. 

"Basketball has given me incredible opportunities throughout my life, but coaching at Westminster has been one of the most rewarding experiences." 

"I've loved watching students grow, challenge themselves and achieve things they never thought possible. It's never just been about winning games. It's been about helping young people become confident, resilient and supportive teammates. I'm incredibly grateful to everyone I've had the privilege to coach over the past 27 years." 

While this year's Intercol marked Al's final game on the Westminster bench, his influence will continue to shape the program for years to come. 

Each year, when the Al Green Medal is presented to the best player on the court, it will serve as a reminder of the values Al has embodied throughout his remarkable career at Westminster: excellence, humility, resilience and an enduring commitment to helping every student become the very best version of themselves.
