Update on Water-Based Activities and Current Algal Bloom
The current Algal Bloom along parts of the South Australian coastline has prompted the School to take additional care in reviewing and managing all water-based activities.
As always, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority.
Following the advice of SA Health and the State Government, Westminster has been undertaking individual risk assessments for all water-based activities. Depending on the nature of the activity and the severity of the Algal Bloom on a given day, staff may decide to postpone or relocate an activity to a lower-risk area.
Should a student or parent feel uncomfortable participating in a scheduled activity, alternative arrangements will be made to accommodate this.
To support these safety measures, risk assessments will consider the following:
- The current Algal Bloom status will be confirmed with local authorities before any activity takes place.
- If the Algal Bloom is considered a public health concern, students may only participate in surface-level (on-top-of-water) activities.
- Students with asthma will be closely monitored and are required to carry their own medication. Staff will also carry backup asthma medication.
- Beach access points with public wash-down stations will be used where possible, or portable wash stations will be provided for student use after the activity.
- An eyewash station will be available in vehicles transporting students to and from venues.
- All equipment will be thoroughly rinsed following each activity.
- Students are reminded to immediately report any signs of irritation or discomfort to staff.
Thank you for your continued support as we prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our students while maintaining valuable learning experiences.
