Westminster Shines at Intercol Against Pembroke
Westminster celebrated one of its most successful Intercols in recent memory, recording a string of impressive victories across multiple sports against long-time rivals Pembroke.
Despite falling just short on the overall scorecard, packed crowds, thrilling contests, and an abundance of school spirit made the event a milestone for our sporting program and our students.
The boys First XVIII produced one of the standout moments of Intercol, securing a spirited two-goal win in front of a huge crowd. The atmosphere was electric, and the victory capped off a season of significant improvement.
With plenty of wins also recorded in the younger year levels, the future of Westminster football looks bright. While the girls’ Football First XVI side narrowly missed out, they delivered their best performance of the season, a testament to their resilience and growth.
In netball, Westminster was in a class of its own, winning 13 of 16 matches. The Premier League team once again showed why they are regarded among the finest in the country. Their quality, consistency, and teamwork reflect a once-in-a-generation group of players who continue to inspire those coming through the program.
There was heartbreak for the Premier League girls’ soccer team, who fell in extra time after a courageous performance. Meanwhile, the Boys’ First XI—despite limited opportunities to play together this season—remained highly competitive and displayed great determination.
On the basketball court came perhaps the game of the event. Entering as underdogs, having lost twice to Pembroke earlier in the year, Westminster’s Senior A basketball team came out firing and at one stage led by 20 points. Their spirited display will go down as one of the highlights of Intercol.
Other memorable results included:
- Debating: A thrilling contest finished 2–2, with Pembroke taking the win on countback.
- Badminton: Despite not securing victory, the team showed impressive improvement and sportsmanship.
- Chess: For the first time, Westminster fell short, but the team fought valiantly.
- Mascot Race: A gallant effort captured the crowd’s hearts, even if not the win.
Overall, Westminster secured more individual wins than ever before against Pembroke, underlining both the progress of our programs and the spirit of our students.
Intercol 2025 was about more than just results—it was a celebration of teamwork, resilience, and what it means to be a Dragon.
