2025 Summer Sport
Term 1 Sport Overview
Term 1 has been a season of achievement and growth across Westminster’s co-curricular sport program.
With strong participation across the Senior School, all seven summer sports celebrated both team and individual success. Among the highlights was our Drive Tennis team, who went undefeated, winning both the Grand Final against PAC and the Intercol against Pembroke, under the guidance of Mr Tiller and Mr Garrett.
Our Westie 1 Sailing team made history by securing the State Championship for the first time, while our Swimming Team, led by Captain Bella Muldoon, delivered another exceptional season of outstanding individual and team performances.
Over the past 12 months, we have continued to seek opportunities to enhance the sporting experience for students—primarily through a renewed focus on delivering quality coaching and tailored programs across each sport. However, one of the most significant shifts this term may have gone unnoticed: the improved level of commitment from students and families.
We have seen a clear lift in students attending all trainings, meetings and matches—even when managing injury—and communicating early when they are unable to participate. This growing culture of commitment has been instrumental in reshaping the Sport program and is a credit to the ongoing support from families.
We also extend our sincere thanks to our coaches, staff and families who have supported our students throughout Term 1. The season has set a strong foundation for the year ahead and we look forward to what lies ahead.

Basketball
Open Girls A/B
The Open A and B Girls Basketball teams embraced a full spectrum of experiences this Term, celebrating wins, learning from losses and even sharing a draw. As the season progressed, the teams demonstrated impressive growth in camaraderie and cohesiveness, which translated into outstanding teamwork on the court.
The Open A team finished the term with a balanced record of three wins and three losses, with several tightly contested games decided by fewer than ten points. Sharpshooting from the three-point line was a defining feature of their performance, proving decisive in key moments. After a minor round win against Pembroke, the team narrowly missed out on retaining the Intercol trophy in what was arguably their closest and most spirited match of the season.
Among the highlights were the strong on-court leadership and tireless work ethic of Captain Rosie Vowles, as well as the elevation of Year 10 students Hannah Edwards and Bella Agars to the Open A team—a reflection of the depth and promise within the program. The inclusive and supportive culture among squad members was evident throughout.
The Open B team recorded two wins, three losses and one draw. Their season was characterised by selfless play and a commitment to team-first basketball. A standout moment came with a commanding 30-point win over Concordia, with every player contributing to the scoreboard.
Both teams can be proud of their development and collective spirit, setting a strong platform for the remainder of the year.
Kate Inglis, Team Manager
Girls Senior C
The C girls Green and White basketball teams both had undefeated seasons. The school’s C teams previously were a proverbial “bounce and a giggle” but this group were good basketball players. They moved the ball up the court with intent and they proved to be good shooters, often scoring in the 60’s. Only a few games were close and the team could have easily competed in B grade. A reliable, hard-working bunch this group was a pleasure to manage.
Mike Martens, Team Manager
Middle Girls
It has been a strong start to the season for Westminster’s Middle A and B Girls Basketball teams, marked by significant growth in both skill and confidence.
Across the term, there have been many moments of inspired play that left coaches Lachie and his team genuinely impressed. The Middle A team developed into a competitive and cohesive side, recording impressive wins over Scotch, Immanuel and twice against Pembroke. Their continued improvement and success were a direct result of their focus and commitment at training.
The Middle B team brought great energy and passion to every game, showing genuine camaraderie and love for the sport. While their only win came against Seymour, their ability to remain positive and play with determination during tight matches was a true credit to their character.
The term concluded on a high, with both teams proud of their development and achievements. With this solid foundation in place, excitement is already building for Term 4, when the teams return with confidence and momentum.

Open Boys
It has been an impressive Term 1 for Westminster’s Boys Tennis program, with strong performances across both the Open and Middle teams.
The Open Boys have performed consistently, recording wins most weeks and demonstrating solid teamwork and perseverance. However, it is the Middle Boys team that has truly stood out—winning nearly every match this term and showing remarkable improvement along the way.
A highlight of the season was Oscar Pritchard’s thrilling three-set match, which showcased resilience and determination. In a contest that swung back and forth, Oscar held his nerve to claim a 22–20 victory in the final set—an inspiring display of focus under pressure.
The growth and effort across the program this term have been commendable, reflecting the dedication of the players and coaches alike.

Cricket
Boys Cricket 1st XI
The 1st XI Boys Cricket squad can be proud of the way they represented both themselves and Westminster throughout the season. Their campaign was marked by impressive wins, narrow defeats and an unwavering commitment to playing with courage, integrity and teamwork.
There were several standout individual performances, including centuries from Lucas Doe and Lachlan Douglass, as well as five-wicket hauls from Austin Hocking and Ian Thompson. These achievements were highlights in a season where the players consistently demonstrated skill and resilience.
However, the defining characteristic of the season was the team’s collective commitment to honest, hard-fought cricket. The group placed great value on playing as a unit—supporting one another and placing team success above individual recognition.
The 1st XI have upheld the School’s values through their determination, sportsmanship and unity, laying a strong foundation for the seasons to come.
Adam Lovett, Team Manager
Boys Cricket 2nd XI
During Term 1 2025, the Second XI Cricket team enjoyed a season filled with competitive spirit, valuable experience and strong results. Under the guidance of coach and manager, the team developed well and produced some excellent cricket across a dynamic and eventful term.
The season began on a positive note with early wins against Sacred Heart and Prince Alfred College, offering a promising start. A setback against St Peter’s served as a timely reminder of the competition’s intensity, but the team responded well with a strong performance against Mercedes. A narrow loss to Concordia was followed by a convincing win over Immanuel, capping off a rollercoaster season with a total of four wins and two losses—an effort that reflects the team’s quality and potential.
Led capably by Callan Putland, the side welcomed a large rotation of players, providing opportunities for a broad group of students to contribute and gain valuable match experience.
A highlight of the term was the internal three-match series held across several afternoons, featuring the Putland XI and the Crouch XI. Designed to offer further match play in a relaxed but competitive setting, the series was played in excellent spirits, with the Crouch XI claiming the trophy.
Congratulations to all who contributed to a successful and enjoyable season. The team looks forward to building on this momentum when cricket returns in Term 4.

Girls Cricket
Girls Cricket at Westminster has taken exciting strides forward this season, with strong participation, growing enthusiasm and another Intercol victory.
It was especially pleasing to welcome several Year 7 students to the team—some picking up a cricket bat for the first time—showing courage and a willingness to embrace something new. Under the expert guidance of coaches Sam Betts and Jamie Siddons, the team developed rapidly across the term.
A highlight of the season was the retention of the Intercol trophy for the third consecutive year, a testament to the team’s dedication and growth. The players consistently applied themselves at training and took on the challenge of competing against more experienced opposition with determination and spirit.
The improvement across the season, both individually and as a team, was evident. Just as importantly, the enjoyment and energy brought to each match and training session captured the heart of Westminster’s sporting values.

Sailing
Sailing
Westminster’s Westie 1 Sailing Team has claimed a sensational victory, securing the State Title at the 2025 South Australian Secondary Schools Championships.
Over three gruelling days of competition in 30-plus degree heat, 12 schools went head-to-head across 28 minor round races and 7 finals. Westminster’s Westie 1 team demonstrated outstanding skill and teamwork to finish first, marking a standout moment in what has already been a stellar season.
The victory is especially meaningful for Year 12 students Grady Sayers and Charlie Edwards, who now prepare to represent Westminster one final time at the National Championships in the July School holidays.
Westminster’s future on the water also looks bright, with Westie 2 making an impressive surge into the finals to place fourth overall.
Both teams were expertly coached by Old Scholar Harry Higgins ('22), whose passion and leadership continue to inspire Westminster’s young sailors, with longstanding supporters Mike Martens and Marriane Collier also playing pivotal roles in guiding the teams throughout the season.

Swimming
Swimming
The 2025 Swimming Team has once again delivered an exceptional season, proudly led by captain Bella Muldoon. Bella set the standard through both her leadership and performance, winning nearly every event she competed in. The team was further strengthened by a formidable senior male group and our enthusiastic “mosquito squad” of swimmers in Years 7, 8 and 9.
The season commenced with the Teams Relay Meet, where the team competed strongly despite being slightly depleted in numbers. However, it was in the B Grade Schools Swimming Competition where Westminster truly shone. A combination of experienced senior swimmers and emerging talent, including promising Year 7 swimmer Zach Kerber, helped secure a dominant win. Westminster placed first in the Boys Competition, finishing an impressive 241 points ahead of second-placed St Michael’s.
Further success came in the overall Combined Shield, with the team finishing 115 points ahead of Eyre Peninsula Secondary School to claim a second title on the day. It was a powerful display of the Westminster spirit—one that not only shone through but beamed brightly.
In the IGSSA competition, which is open to girls only, Westminster faced tough competition and was without one of its top swimmers. While the team did not place in the top three overall, many individual races were won or finished in the top three, showcasing the team’s depth and resilience.
Throughout Term 1, swimmers also took part in Wednesday night mini-meets against other independent and Catholic schools. These events offer a valuable opportunity for emerging swimmers to gain experience in a more relaxed, yet still competitive, setting. Westminster placed sixth overall in the heats and progressed to the finals at St Peter’s Boys Pool. Despite many swimmers being unavailable due to other commitments, the team performed with great determination and pride.
The dedication, sportsmanship and camaraderie shown by every swimmer this term has been exceptional. The team continues to welcome new members and remains a wonderful example of what it means to represent Westminster.
Congratulations to the 2025 Swimming Team—you have represented the School with pride and distinction.
Kathy Ayliffe, Team Manager
Tennis
Drive Tennis
Term 1 has been a standout season for Westminster’s Drive Tennis team, marked by consistent success, strong individual performances and outstanding team spirit.
The team went undefeated through the pool stage, securing victories against all five opposing schools to earn a place in the semi-final. There, they triumphed in a close contest against Marryatville High School, winning 5 sets to 4. In the Division 2 Grand Final, the team faced PAC and, after trailing 2 sets to 1 following the doubles, rallied to win four of the six singles matches and claim the title for the fourth time.
Individual performances across the season were exceptional. Dayna Harrison, Sam Scott-Young and Harry Panton remained undefeated in singles. Captain Alex Gellert and number one seed Lakshay Madankumar each dropped just one singles match for the term. Thinus Janse-Van Rensburg delivered a solid performance with a near even singles record, and Henry Styles also contributed strongly, recording one win and one loss from his two appearances. Doubles combinations proved particularly successful, with Alex and Lakshay, Dayna and Sam, and Harry and Thinus winning the majority of their matches.
To cap off a successful term, the team defeated Pembroke in the annual Intercol, winning 8 sets to 4. Notable singles victories came from Sam, Harry and Dayna, with Stella Privopoulos and Tina Tian also contributing valuable wins. In the mixed doubles, Sam and Dayna, Lakshay and Stella, and Alex and Tina all secured victories. Harry partnered with Emerson Touchet in a closely contested match, falling just short.
This latest Intercol triumph marks Westminster’s third win in the past four meetings.
Congratulations to the entire Drive squad, and a special acknowledgement to coach Sam Wall for his leadership and support throughout the season.
David Tiller, Team Manager
A2 Middle Tennis
Term 1 was a season of growth and development for Westminster Tennis, with students of all abilities making strong progress in their skills and competing in regular matches. With 85 players involved, the School proudly fielded eight teams and introduced an internal competition to ensure every student had the opportunity to play each week.
A key development this season was the introduction of two new Pennant Teams—one for senior and one for middle tennis—designed to complement the existing Drive and Middle A teams. This structure allowed a broader group of students to experience high-level match play and challenge themselves against strong competition. Both Pennant Teams enjoyed a competitive season, with the Senior Pennant team narrowly missing a top-two finish in their division.
Westminster also competed in the interschool knockout tennis tournament, facing Henley High School. While the results did not fall in Westminster’s favour, the experience of playing supersets in School colours against quality opposition provided valuable learning opportunities for all involved.
The Middle A2 team had an exceptional term, winning all but one of their minor round matches to qualify for the semi-finals, where they were eventually defeated by a strong Marryatville side. The team’s consistency and cohesion were impressive, with standout performances across the board. James Swinstead completed the season undefeated in singles, while Chloe Greenfield, Ethan Greenfield, Ollie Gilbert and Billy Zhou each lost only one singles match during the term.
Looking ahead, Term 4 promises more exciting opportunities for Westminster’s tennis players, with additional knockout tournaments, expanded training sessions and interschool competitions planned.
As the Captain of Tennis shared in his presentation of the Drive Team Shield to Mr Shephard, “The future looks bright for Westminster Tennis.”
Nick Garrett, Team Manager

Their strong performance earned them a place in the SAAS semi-final, where they faced a highly competitive Blackfriars side. Although narrowly defeated, the team’s commitment and sportsmanship stood out.
The season concluded on a high note with a convincing Intercol victory over Pembroke, winning two sets to nil. Angus Van Kruyssen was named MVP for the match following a standout performance.
Recognition for the Term 1 season goes to Charlie Edwards, who was awarded MVP, and Joshua Bund, who received the Coaches Award for his contribution and determination.

Under the guidance of coach Mr Boslooper, the team quickly developed into a cohesive and supportive unit.
Throughout the season, the boys demonstrated commitment and teamwork, both at training and in matches. Their efforts were rewarded with a number of competitive performances, culminating in a fourth-place finish overall.
A season highlight was the team’s determined Intercol performance against Pembroke, where they secured a hard-fought win. Deakin Alvey’s efforts on court earned him the MVP for the match.
The Senior B team’s camaraderie and consistent improvement were clear markers of a successful season.
Jayne Fulton, Team Manager
Boys Volleyball Senior C
The Senior C Volleyball team enjoyed an excellent Term 1 season under the guidance of coach Will Reid, finishing with just one loss. A key strength of the team was the genuine enjoyment they found in playing together, which fostered a positive and supportive culture both on and off the court.
Throughout the season, the team displayed strong determination and resilience, securing several close victories in matches that went to a deciding third set. Their ability to stay composed under pressure was a hallmark of their campaign.
Season highlights included Riley’s winning serve streak of six consecutive points in a thrilling match against St Michael’s College, Vincent’s powerful and consistent spiking, and Rhys’ unique and much-enjoyed serving routine. The team’s strong sense of unity and belief in one another often saw them rally from challenging positions to turn matches around.
It was a fantastic term of growth, competition and camaraderie, and the team should be proud of what they accomplished.
Jarrad Mitton, Team Manager
Year 7 Volleyball
The Year 7 Boys Volleyball team enjoyed a highly successful Term 1, showing remarkable growth both individually and as a team. With over 16 students regularly attending training and matches, the group brought strong energy and depth to every session, fostering healthy competition and mutual support.
The team delivered an impressive season, recording just one loss across the term—a reflection of their consistent attendance, commitment to training and eagerness to improve. One of the most admirable qualities of this group was their embrace of teamwork. Their encouragement of one another and collective positivity were evident in every match and training session.
Their willingness to learn and compete with integrity made them a standout team this term. Congratulations to the entire squad on a memorable season. Their efforts have laid a strong foundation as they look ahead to more competition in Term 4.
Aimee-Claire Lees, Team Manager
Girls Volleyball
The Senior Girls Volleyball program has enjoyed a season of strong growth, particularly within the A team, many of whom were involved in the 2024 Australian Schools Volleyball Cup (ASVC) in December. This experience was evident in Term 1, as the team demonstrated composure in tightly contested matches, often prevailing through consistency and disciplined training.
Early in the season, the Senior A team secured an impressive win over a competitive Pembroke side. While they were unable to repeat this outcome in the Summer Intercol match later in the term, they continued to build momentum, progressing to the IGSSA semi-finals. Despite a determined effort, they were bested by a strong Concordia team on the day.
Guided by coach Angela Cash, the A team has embraced a more rigorous training schedule, including additional strength and conditioning sessions, with a clear focus on improving their performance in future tournaments, including the 2024 ASVC.
The Senior B team, coached by Seb Cheesman-Dutton, brought enthusiasm and a strong sense of teamwork to the court. Throughout the season, they developed their game awareness and tactical complexity, showing the resilience to fight back and win sets, even when under pressure. Their positivity and support for one another have been standout qualities.
Meanwhile, the Senior C team placed a strong focus on refining their core skills. Despite mixed results, they have much to be proud of in the way they have grown together as a team.
Each of the Senior teams has shown encouraging signs of development and unity, laying strong foundations for the remainder of the year.
