Athletics

Athletics has long been a valued part of School life at Westminster and centres around the Athletics Carnival held in Term 1. This event brings the School community together and provides the selection pathway for students to represent Westminster later in the year.

Students who place first or second in their events at the Westminster Athletics Carnival progress to represent the School at either the IGSSA Athletics Carnival (for girls) or the Achilles Cup (for boys), both held at the SA Athletics Stadium in late Term 3. Note: Westminster Athletics Carnival is conducted in year level groups, whereas the IGSSA Athletics Carnival and the Achilles Cup are run in age group divisions.

At the conclusion of Winter sport in Term 3, students who placed first, second or third in their events are expected to attend a three week preparation program. This program includes Wednesday morning training sessions where students refine field event technique, practise sprint starts, build relay cohesion and, for endurance athletes, complete group training runs. Third placegetters act as reserves in the event that the first or second placegetter is unable to compete due to injury or illness. In addition, the top five students in each year level in the 100m are expected to be part of the relay preparation during this period.

This program supports students to represent the School with confidence and pride while contributing to Westminster’s strong tradition in Athletics.
