Prep Pick for Term 1
As we kick off the new School year, my Prep Pick for Term 1 is Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown. This book was gifted to me by a Westminster parent with a simple message inside the cover: thank you for understanding.
In Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown explores the language of human emotion and experience, identifying more than eighty-five emotions that shape how we connect, respond and find meaning.
At its heart, the book reminds us that language matters. When we can name what we are feeling, we are better able to understand ourselves and those around us.
For parents and carers, this insight is especially valuable. Modelling emotional awareness and empathy supports children to develop emotional literacy and resilience.
When children see adults approaching emotions with calm reflection and curiosity, they learn that all feelings, including the challenging ones, are normal and manageable.
This book encourages us to pause and respond with compassion rather than perfection. It reminds us that connection grows through understanding and that strong relationships are built through empathy and self-awareness.
I look forward to sharing more with you in the Prep Picks space throughout the year.
Warm regards,
Cassie Schreuder
