Westminster Announces Major Redevelopment of Junior Primary Facility

27 May 2025

Media Release

Westminster has unveiled plans for a new purpose-built Junior Primary building within its Preparatory School, marking an exciting new chapter in the School’s commitment to educational excellence and adventurous learning.

Designed to inspire curiosity, connection and confidence in Westminster’s youngest learners, the new facility will cater for students in Reception to Year 3.

The redevelopment marks Westminster’s fifth major capital development in five years and will join a suite of purposefully designed spaces across the campus — including the Styles Centre for Inquiry and Innovation, the Forder Centre (Performing Arts, Library and Dining Hall), and the recently transformed Sturt Grove Farm.

Principal Simon Shepherd said the project reflects the School’s values and vision for the future of education.

“Our new Junior Primary facility will be more than a building — it will be a place where children feel a deep sense of belonging, where imagination is encouraged and where the foundations for lifelong adventurous learning are being laid,” Mr Shepherd said.

The $25 million dollar redevelopment will be a key expression of Westminster’s approach to Adventurous Education, where learning stretches beyond the classroom and into real-world, inquiry-led experiences. The building has been designed with flexibility, innovation and sustainability in mind — providing spaces that invite exploration, collaboration and joy in learning.

“Our new Preparatory School building will provide the conditions for truly Adventurous Education to thrive,” Mr Shepherd said.

“Every design element has been thoughtfully considered to support agile, future-focused learning. From STEM-rich spaces and collaborative project areas to reflection zones and immersive outdoor spaces, this facility will embody Westminster’s commitment to nurturing every aspect of a child’s development.”

The new Junior Primary facility will include:

  • Art and STEM spaces, along with creative breakout areas for small-group discovery
  • Flexible, technology-integrated learning spaces
  • Adaptive classrooms designed to spark inquiry and innovation
  • Immersive outdoor learning environments that nurture wellbeing, resilience and a sense of wonder
  • Collaborative staff spaces that support progressive teaching practice

Head of Preparatory School Simon McKenzie said the new space will enable Westminster educators to deliver individualised, nurturing and child-led programs.

“Our approach celebrates the wonder of childhood and the uniqueness of every learner,” Mr McKenzie said.

“The new environment will give us the flexibility to support each child as they develop their voice, agency and love of learning.”

Brown Falconer has been engaged as the architect for the Preparatory School redevelopment. Construction is expected to commence at the end of 2025, with the building set to open for the start of the 2027 School year.
