Shaping the Future of Football at Westminster

01 May 2025

Football at Westminster is entering an exciting new chapter, with the First XVIII set to take the field this weekend under the leadership of newly appointed coach Seamus Maloney.

A highly respected figure in South Australian football, Mr Maloney brings extensive experience as both a player and coach. A former Captain of Sturt Football Club in the SANFL, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience developing young talent.

Westminster Head of Co-Curricular, Stephen Schwerdt, said Mr Maloney’s appointment would have a significant impact across the entire School Football Program.

“Seamus brings an outstanding level of experience, knowledge and passion to Westminster Football,” Mr Schwerdt said.

“He is a leader who not only understands the game but deeply values the role sport plays in shaping character and building community.”

To officially launch the 2025 football season, Westminster hosted players and parents on Wednesday night for a special event, featuring Westminster old scholar Tom Wheaton (‘23) who plays SANFL league football at South Adelaide.

With more than 340 participants across boys, girls, Junior and Senior Schools, football at Westminster is designed to offer every child the opportunity to discover their potential, whether playing competitively or socially.

Football Coordinator Heath Lawry said the focus in 2025 remains firmly on developing the whole student through sport.

“Football at Westminster is about so much more than what happens on game day,” Mr Lawry said.

“It is about nurturing resilience, encouraging leadership and celebrating effort. Every child, no matter their experience or ability, has a place in our program.”
