The Subtle Power of Practice
Violinist Jascha Heifetz once said:
“If I don't practise one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it.”
Although spoken in the context of music, these words apply to every area of co-curricular life—on the stage, on the field, in rehearsal rooms, service projects and leadership teams.
At Westminster, we believe in being adventurous—in stepping into new spaces and stretching ourselves in ways that build confidence, creativity and connection. The co-curricular program offers these opportunities in abundance. Whether a student is preparing for a performance, a big game, a service initiative or a public speaking event, consistent effort behind the scenes is often what shapes the most rewarding experiences.
The courage to practise, to rehearse, to refine and improve—especially when no one is watching—is what creates the quiet growth that becomes visible over time. The best moments in the co-curricular calendar are rarely the result of last-minute effort; they are the product of ongoing commitment, teamwork and trust in the process.
As families, one of the most powerful ways to support our students is to value the journey over the result. To notice the hours spent learning lines, training after school, attending early rehearsals or showing up for meetings. These are the habits that build not just skill, but set up sustainable patterns of effort that last well beyond the moment.
So, as we move into the heart of Term 3, let us continue to encourage our students to be present, to commit, and to take pride in the everyday moments that help shape something bigger. Because, as Heifetz reminds us, practice may be quiet—but its impact is anything but.
