Supporting Andrew as he Runs for a Remarkable Cause

This week, our Westminster community is cheering on Acting Principal Andrew Whiteman as he undertakes an extraordinary challenge, running in a relay of more than 720 kilometres from Adelaide to Elliston as part of Bucky's Beach Relay.

As this newsletter reaches families, Andrew and the relay team will be on the fourth day of their five-day journey, making their way across South Australia towards Saturday's finish at the Elliston Football Oval. 

The relay is raising funds towards an ambitious goal of $300,000 to help build a new community sporting facility at Elliston Area School, where Andrew's close friend, Simon "Bucky" Baccanello, taught.  

Designed as a shared space for students and the broader community, the facility will provide local children and young people with a safe, welcoming place to be active, connect with others and enjoy healthy recreation after school. 

Bucky was a much-loved teacher, passionate surfer and valued member of the Elliston community who tragically lost his life in a shark attack while surfing near the town in May 2023. In the wake of this tragedy, family and friends came together with a shared vision to create something positive in his memory. This new facility will stand as a lasting legacy, reflecting Bucky's passion for young people, wellbeing and community. 

For Andrew, the challenge is deeply personal. 

"This run is about honouring Bucky and supporting a community that meant so much to him. If we can help create something that gives young people opportunities to connect, be active and thrive, then every kilometre is worth it." 

Throughout the journey, Andrew and the relay team have been welcomed by communities across South Australia, with many joining them along the way to support the cause and honour Bucky's legacy.
