Private Academic Tutoring at Westminster
At Westminster, we understand that some parents and carers may choose to engage a private academic tutor to support their child’s learning beyond the classroom. To ensure clarity and uphold child protection standards, the following process applies when tutoring is arranged on School grounds.
This guidance applies to private academic tutors only. Arrangements for Music Tutors are overseen separately by the Music Faculty.
Engaging a Private Tutor
Private academic tutors are engaged directly by parents and carers. Westminster does not endorse or assess the quality of individual tutors.
Parents and carers should provide the accompanying flyer to any tutor they employ.
Mandatory Requirements
To work on School grounds, tutors must hold:
- a current Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect (RRHAN) training
These checks are essential. Tutors without both clearances cannot work with students on School grounds.
Tutors must present these certificates to Westminster’s Human Resources team. Once verified, tutors will complete the SINE non-trade contractor induction, where compliance documentation is recorded.
Requesting Approval
Parents and carers must request approval for tutoring by emailing Andrea Sherwood at asherwood@westminster.sa.edu.au.
Please include:
- the tutor’s full name
- the proposed frequency of sessions including days and times
- confirmation that the tutor holds current WWCC and RRHAN certification and will present these documents to the School
Approval must be granted before any tutoring can take place.
Access to School and Sign-In Requirements
Following induction, tutors will be registered as contractors in SINE.
For every visit, tutors must:
- sign in at Main Reception on arrival
- sign out when the session has concluded
This ensures accurate records of all visitors on School grounds.
Tutoring at School: Safety and Visibility
All tutoring sessions must prioritise visibility and child protection.
Sessions must:
- take place in the Library
- remain in view of staff and the wider School community
Tutors are expected to maintain behaviour appropriate to a School environment at all times.
Approved Tutoring Times
Tutoring sessions must occur within the following times:
- Before School: 7.30am to 8.30am
- After School: 3.30pm to 5.00pm
Sessions must not occur outside of these hours.
Important to Note
Westminster School reserves the right to decline any request for private tutoring on School grounds.
By following this process, parents and carers help ensure a safe and supportive environment for all children.
