Mobile phones and smart watches

At Westminster Preparatory School, we pride ourselves on providing a safe, nurturing environment that supports all students. We aim to facilitate a balanced curriculum offering that helps to develop students’ general academic ability while fostering individual strengths and areas of passion.

We understand that children come to school with exposure to different experiences and a primary component of our role as educators is to provide age and stage appropriate activities for our learners. A crucial part of this is how we integrate technology into the curriculum and support and educate students to become responsible digital citizens.

Westminster Preparatory School recognises that there are times when it is appropriate and useful for students to have access to a mobile phone and smart watch, both for convenience and security. Many students walk to school or arrive on school buses, and we understand that parents want to be able to contact them as needed and we completely support this notion.

In 2025 we are however going to collect mobile phones and smart watches at the beginning of Lesson 1 and securely store them securely for the duration of the school day. Items will be returned to the students before they leave school at the end of the day. We are implementing this practice to ensure that expensive items are kept safe and most importantly, to minimise distractions for students during learning time. Please be assured that if you need to contact your child, our dedicated office staff will happily support you. We understand that some students use smart watches to track fitness and certainly encourage this for activities and training outside of school. Please note that there are no restrictions with students wearing standard watches as a time piece.
