Spotlight on Sport
Last weekend our First XI Cricket team experienced a difficult day with the bat. Moments like these can invite quick reactions and calls for change. While reflection and improvement are always important, the hardest and often most valuable decision can be to stay the course.
From my experience in professional cricket, I have seen firsthand that one poor result never tells the full story. During my time as High-Performance Manager with the Adelaide Strikers, we once bowled the Sydney Thunder out for 15 on a good batting surface. That same Thunder team went on to reach the Finals while our team finished second to bottom. The lesson has stayed with me. A single performance does not define a season or a program.
This perspective is strongly supported by research in youth sport. Early dominance can create a false sense of long-term ability, with many early selected athletes not progressing over time. Studies show that a significant percentage of children leave competitive sport by mid-adolescence, often due to early pressure and burnout. Physical advantages at younger ages frequently fade, while true talent tends to emerge later through skill, decision making, adaptability and work ethic.
Cricket, like many technical sports, rewards patience, consistency and the willingness to keep showing up. Some of the most powerful learning moments and opportunities to strengthen a team come through challenge, not comfort.
At Westminster School, our focus remains on developing resilience and connection. We believe in supporting students through setbacks, knowing that growth rarely follows a straight line.
