How do you support my child if they do not have experience in running?
The running program at Westventure is used as a vehicle to help students build resilience, confidence and a sense of accomplishment at an individual level. We do not expect students to be experienced runners — we simply ask that every student has a go and gives their best effort.
With multiple staff members supporting students on the track, we will work alongside each student to help them achieve their individual goals. We provide advice, encouragement, respect and care, supporting students every step of the way.
What are the forms of communication over the camp?
Students will have the opportunity to write two letters home during camp, on Nights 2 and 5. The Westventure Coordinator Maia Schnaars, will contact home by phone or email if there is an incident or a significant change to our program that you need to be aware of.
For all of our Outdoor Education programs you can assume “No news is good news.” So, if you don’t hear from us, please have peace of mind knowing that your child is safe, supported and enjoying their camp experience.
How will you support my child’s medical needs?
Prior to our departure, we will work closely with our Health Centre to understand and plan for the medical needs of each student. We will also liaise with parents/caregivers and students to develop appropriate contingency plans so that we are well prepared to respond to their individual needs.
During camp, a second Outdoor Education teacher will oversee student wellbeing and help manage medical needs, with ongoing support from the Westventure Coordinator.
Our priority is to ensure that every student feels safe, supported and well cared for throughout their Westventure experience.
How do you support students who feel anxious or homesick?
Feeling anxious or homesick is a very common and natural response to being away from home, familiar people and routines.
Our staff are trained in a range of wellbeing strategies to help students recognise, acknowledge and manage their emotions. We will work with students to develop strategies that build their confidence and resilience throughout the camp.
This may include helping them connect with other students, encouraging them to stay involved in activities and providing opportunities to talk with a trusted staff member when needed.
How do you cater for my child’s dietary needs?
We take students’ dietary requirements seriously and work carefully to ensure that every student’s needs are catered for.
Our camp cook and kitchen team are able to accommodate a range of dietary requirements, including allergies and intolerances. In some circumstances, meals can be tailored to suit individual needs.
Our aim is to ensure every student can enjoy mealtimes safely and confidently while they are at camp.
How will you support my child’s complex learning needs?
If your child has complex learning needs, we want to work closely with you to ensure they have a positive, successful and inclusive camp experience.
Before Westventure, we take the time to understand each student’s individual needs, strengths and the strategies that help them thrive. Our staff have experience supporting a diverse range of learners and will make reasonable adjustments where appropriate to help students participate fully in camp activities.
We want every student to feel included, supported and confident while developing their independence and resilience.
We believe that every student should have the opportunity to experience adventure, and we will work with you to help make that possible.
