Finding Your Path: Crows Player Charlie Edwards' Message on Growth and Perseverance
Last week, as part of the High-Performance Series, we were fortunate to welcome Adelaide Crows footballer Charlie Edwards to Westminster to share his journey — a compelling reminder that success in sport and life rarely follows a straight path.
Charlie spoke openly about the challenges he faced, many of which mirror those experienced by our own students. From leaving Bendigo to board in Melbourne during his schooling years, to navigating the uncertainty of being drafted and eventually relocating to Adelaide, his story was grounded in persistence, adaptability and resilience. He shared that while he was never confident, he would be drafted, he always held on to the dream. His message was clear: students develop at different rates, and you do not need to be the best player at 14 or 17 to find your way. What matters most is staying committed, being open to growth and continuing to work hard.
Over 100 students attended the lunchtime session, a reflection of both the strength of our High-Performance program and the genuine interest in hearing from someone whose journey has been anything but linear.
Charlie’s story connects deeply with Westminster’s values of resilience and courage. It reinforces that every child’s journey is different, and that success — on the sporting field, in the classroom or through co-curricular pursuits — is shaped by consistent effort and a belief in what is possible.
While Charlie’s talk focused on football, the message is universal. Whether a student is developing in sport, the arts, leadership or academic studies, it is not about early success — it is about perseverance, learning from setbacks and having the courage to keep going. At Westminster, we are committed to supporting each student’s growth, knowing that with effort and persistence, anything is possible.
