Westminster Netball Ends Era with Championship Glory
Westminster farewelled one of its most successful sporting teams ever last weekend, as the Premier League netball squad closed their undefeated run with a commanding Grand Final victory.
Often described by Principal Simon Shepherd as a once-in-a-generation team, the Premier League side capped off another dominant season with a resounding 47-goal win over Immanuel in the IGSSA Premier League Grand Final.
This triumph followed an earlier 28-goal victory over Scotch College in the Statewide Knockout Championship, cementing their place as State Champions and confirming their status as one of Westminster’s greatest teams.
The Premier League squad, featuring three Australian representatives and six from South Australia, will farewell 13 players who will graduate at the end of the year.
Year 12 Premier League player Chloe Peacock said that despite School netball not being compulsory, the choice to represent Westminster was one they all embraced.
“Many of us play for different clubs and are in different teams, but school netball brings us all together, playing in the same dress, same team and for the same school. It's rare to have all your friends in one team, and school netball makes that possible.”
For fellow Year 12 student Harriet Robertson, representing Westminster through netball has been about more than results.
“When I look back on my time playing for Westminster, I will remember the special friendships formed and the comradery between year levels, but also the elite coaches I was so privileged to have since early primary school. Their feedback, advice and genuine passion for the game is something I will never forget, nor take for granted.”
Harriet also shared her advice for the next generation of Westminster netballers.
“I would tell the younger students to make the most of what the netball program at Westminster offers. Listen to your coach and implement their advice and feedback best you can on court. Enjoy playing with your friends, and have a go at every position.”
While the brilliance of the Premier League team has been a hallmark all season, Saturday also showcased the determination of the Premier League Reserves in their own Grand Final.
In a gripping contest where momentum swung repeatedly, Westminster trailed by one goal with just 60 seconds remaining. A match-defining intercept from an Immanuel centre pass turned the game in our favour, and a composed shot on the final siren sealed a thrilling one-goal victory and the title.
Year 12 student Milla Liptak described the match as one the highlights of her time playing netball at Westminster.
“ It was a really close game where everyone gave 100% until the final whistle — it showed how much trust we had in each other,” she said.
The achievements of this senior group have set an inspiring standard for the generations of Westminster netballers who will follow.
