Information packs for Duke of Ed Expeditions for next year can be collected from the OED office in 2019, or on Inspire at Play@West, Outdoor Education.
Congratulations to the ten students who were presented with their Gold Award at a ceremony at Government House on Tuesday 20 November. His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC was impressed with the range of activities and personal challenges undertaken by the Westminster cohort. Westminster was well represented with ten out of the thirty awardees being from Westminster. No other organisation or school had such a large representation. Many other students could not attend due to SACE exam commitments on the day.
Speech Day will recognise twenty-six Westminster Year 12 students who have completed their Gold Award in 2018. This is a record number and a fantastic reflection on the students and the activities on offer at Westminster.
The three Year 12 classes have been busy completing their final expeditions for 2018. So far the classes have been rock-climbing at Mt Arapiles, Scuba Diving on the South Coast, Sea Kayaking along the south coast in June, skiing in Victoria, bushwalking in the Flinders, and kayaking on the North Coast of Kangaroo Island or the backwaters of the Murray River.
All Year 10 students in 2018 participate in this twelve day Residential Outdoor Education program in their House Groups. This program is unique to Westminster School and forms a lasting memory and learning experience for the students involved. An information pack has been emailed to all parents of students involved. The consent forms were due back at school by Friday 9 November.
As part of the lead up, all Year 9 students will be involved in sail/kayak training in Week 8, and First Aid training in Week 9.
Over the first weekend in November, over 20 students and three staff were involved in learning to surf activities on the beautiful, surf friendly, Yorke Peninsula. Students participated in surfing activities and progressions every day, with many students completing Bronze and Silver requirements. Some of our older students were also working off their Surf Instructor Accreditation requirements. The trip was a new initiative developed by expert surfer and passionate Outdoor Education teacher Ms Kara Lucas, and serves as an excellent precedent for future ventures.
