Our focus for this year at Westminster is ‘living with purpose’. I think we all have individual purposes that we serve: a career, saving for a new car, paying off the mortgage. But beyond that, I think we all need a purpose greater than the self, a ‘big picture’, an arena in which to make our contribution. In Christian faith we often attribute this, in faith, to ‘God’s call’ upon our lives. Specifically, in the Uniting Church we hold tight to the notion of ‘service’. And this can take many forms. In his letter to the early Church at Corinth the writer encouraged the community there that “there are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service. The Spirit's presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all” [I Corinthians 12: 6.7].
There are a few features of purpose there: It varies. Its all of us. It benefits the whole. It shows God.
Together at Westminster we will reflect on such a ‘call’ throughout 2021. Want to live with purpose? Find what it is that YOU can do in the service of all.
