Early Learning to Year 12

Enthusiasm

The first task of groups of Year 11 students in leading Chapel is to agree on a theme to follow. In recent weeks the Woollacott and Dunstan Year 11s have chosen ‘Forgiveness’ and ‘Zest’ respectively as their topic of focus.

Not only are these amongst our selected ‘Values institute’ Character Strengths, but they are sound biblical notions. Zest, has as its corollary, enthusiasm, which actually comes from two Greek words, ‘en’, meaning ‘in’ and ‘Theos’ for ‘God’; which makes it effectively, in-God-ism. I have always thought that the person of faith or trust in God should therefore be keen to embrace life’s experience and opportunity and be open and kind towards people. With zest.

One of the prayers that the students themselves sourced for Chapel says it well:

Thank you for the gift of zest that you have given us.
We pray that you fill us with energy and enthusiasm to live life to the fullest
and approach each day with excitement and anticipation.

Help us to find joy in the simple pleasures of life
and the courage to pursue our passions with zeal and determination.
May we be reminded of the power of zest during difficult times,
giving us the strength and resilience to face any challenge.

Inspire us to inspire others with our zest for life,
and may they come to experience the fullness of life that you have in store for them.
Thank you for your constant presence and guidance in our lives. Amen.
