Music Notes

Congratulations to Nikolas Damato (Year 8 Kelly) who achieved an A+ (High Distinction) for his Grade 2 AMEB trumpet exam.

Well done to Eva Bratkovic (Year 7 Dunstan) and Jenny Xu (Year 9 Fricker) who both did a wonderful job playing in the ‘Tutti Fluting’ concert hosted by the Flute Society of SA at Unley Uniting Church on Sunday 6 September. Both girls performed a solo confidently with an accompanist they hadn’t met before the day, and it was a great experience to get back into playing for a live audience.

Music Night(s) 2020

Music Nights 2020 (Concert Of Very Interesting Dimensions) ran over two nights this year to cater for guidelines around audience capacity. On Wednesday 9 September the inaugural live performance of the Intermediate Wind Ensemble started the show off, under the direction of new staff member this year Kellie Lenger. Big Band 3, Big Band 2, Vocal Jazz 2 and our two Rock Bands were all part of a very entertaining concert.

In a similar vein, the Senior Wind Ensemble also started the Thursday night event off, a slightly longer concert featuring our Year 12 students as special guests. The Year 12 students almost solely performed their own rendition of September as a feature piece, and many of them featured in ensembles as soloists throughout the evening.

Thank you to everyone who came along to either or both concerts to support the 170 students involved. My thanks especially to Darren McLachlan who filmed and live-streamed both concerts for families that were not able to attend, and also for many who were interstate or overseas.

Congratulations to all the students involved for their spirit and positive attitude in what has been a turbulent year. Finally, my thanks to all the music staff, including directors, accompanists, tech crew, backstage staff and front of house personnel for their support with both of these events.

Stage 2 Solo Performance

Our Stage 2 Solo Performance class completed their final assessment type with a public performance to parents, family members and students. The concert involved a great variety of styles and genres. Well done and congratulations to all the Stage 2 Solo Performance students for their efforts in completing this aspect of their work. The standard of performance was very impressive.

Big Band and Vocal Jazz Bonanza

Our annual Big Band and Vocal Jazz Concert which normally runs at the Norwood Hotel on the Wednesday of Week 10 was changed to be held the MMC this year. All three Big Bands and both Vocal Jazz Ensembles performed at this concert. Some students were being assessed for Stage 2 Ensemble Performance, but also to celebrate the end of the 2020 Big Band year, and the start of the 2021 Big Band year. Included in this concert was a piano duet by Yolanda Fang (Year 12 Heaslip) with Chris Gould which was also performed for Yolanda’s Stage 2 Ensemble assessment. Well done to all the students involved in this concert and thanks to everyone who supported the event.

Hindley Street Country Club

Some people may be familiar with this organisation, a group of talented musicians who have posted re-makes of classic tracks online. This year of course it has reached a new level of interest due to lack of live performance. The HSCC have 150,000 subscribers and a big following in America. On Wednesday, a group of 15 Westminster students recorded a track with the band, which also included a few of our instrumental and vocal tutors. The result will be evident in a few weeks and we will be pleased to share this project online with the Westminster community. Watch this space!

Here is one of their recent tracks recorded at AJS studios - www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI1iLTBnOB4
