Academic Curriculum

Students in the Preparatory School are introduced to and study a wide range of subjects. Essential skills for learning are emphasised in reading, comprehension, spelling, writing and mathematics. Children are encouraged at all times to stretch to their potential. We see it as essential that students have a balanced offering, so Music (appreciation, theory and instrumental), Science and Technology, Art, Physical Education, LOTE (Language Other Than English), Religious and Values Education, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and library skills are important aspects of our weekly curriculum.

Study of a language other than English begins at Reception, with Japanese presently being offered. We also offer Mandarin classes after school on Mondays as an option for students. Interesting and challenging instrumental programs for music are offered to all students from Year 2.

Access to up-to-date and relevant information is vital for all Westminster students. As well as providing a well staffed and resourced library in the Preparatory School, all our students have great access to online information. Timetabled IT lessons in our computer laboratory with specialist staff enable students to learn skills relative to their needs. Students are taught progressively how to access the Internet, but information accessed is monitored through our intranet. In addition to our computer rooms that caters for over 60 students, students have access to computers in various areas of the School for individual or small group access. All Year 7 students have their own laptop for classroom use, and trolleys of laptops and iPads visit classes as required.  Interactive Whiteboards are also used in all classrooms, including our Japanese classroom.
